We Sailors are Hopeless Romantics, We Love our Traditions. This is just finishing a Trend that started with Adm Zumwalt. Amazed it took this long. I am a Technician and Master at Arms no Gender Involved about time the rest of the Navy Caught Up.

It is pretty obvious the move is motivated by cultural change, ie PC change to accommodate the integration of women into all nooks and crannies of the AF. Doing away with 'mortarman' 'fireman' says it all. The rationale provided by the CNO etc is pure boilerplate and said with a straight face which is a real discredit to service members who have worked to attain their rating. Interesting to know if doing away with ratings will now so greatly benefit service men and women, why wasn't it done 200 years ago.

I don't think the women in the Navy are very happy, either. I understand the need to "clean up" the ratings, especially if transitioning personnel want to apply for civilian positions. IMO, the current Navy practice makes the ratings look more job/task specific and may act to hide the actual qualifications of the applicant. I also "get" the attempt to remove the misogyny from terms that end in the word "man," BUT when I hear the word "fireman" or "yeoman" or whatever, I don't think in terms of gender, I think in terms of job function. Maybe that makes me a statistical outlier, but a job is a job - gender should have NO impact on a person's ability to perform or the pay they receive. If I can haul a 50 lb fire hose up 5 flights of stairs and you can't, guess who should get the job? Not you.
