Sounds like the Navy Standard from my time. You run the ship aground you are fired. you're the instructor and your student dies, you're fired.

So does fired mean removed from that position and/or criminal charges related to the death?

It is very unfortunate that this sailor died. Here's hoping that there was no foul play involved. I would hate to see my beloved SEALS get a black eye over the actions of one individual.

I don't think there was foul play but I think there became a loss of common sense which could lead to criminal charges.
