Here we go again. Japan's Defense Minister Taro Kono revealed that three individuals linked to Iwakuni Air Base tested positive for the virus and had lied about their travel plans after entering the country.
The three who flew into Tokyo’s Haneda Airport from the United States on Sunday. After taking polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests at the airport, they told authorities that they would rent a car to the U.S. Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni but instead flew commercially on Monday before their test results became available — despite military guidelines prohibiting them from using public transportation.
U.S. military personnel in Japan are exempt from its travel ban on visitors from the United States although they must undergo PCR tests if they fly into major international airports. These visitors are required to stay at airports or facilities designated by quarantine authorities after arrival until their test results are released.
This has again fueled their concern for the US military Covid-19 situation in Japan, especially with the current incidences in Okinawa.

Okinawa had a total infection of around 150 since February and adds 100+ from the US military personnel in a matter of weeks. It was zero for a couple of weeks before this incident. And now it's also in Iwakuni. While even Permanent Residents can't go back to Japan if they're in a "banned country" right now, US military personnel from the US can enter because of the Status of Forces Agreement (SOFA). Technically, those under SOFA don't "exist" in Japan. Transparency and timely communication are critical for control and containment.
