If this "statistic" was true then the VA and the US Government would be guilty of gross negligence, criminal negligence and fraud in terms of their attempts to help veterans fight depression d overcome or deal with . SFC Joe S. Davis Jr., MSM, DSL.
This statistic has been thrown out every year for the past few years as though it were helpful and accurate as a prediction.
Thankfully this statistic is equivalent to an "urban legend" and the number of veterans who successfully kill themselves varies from day to day as would be expected. Some programs are more effective than others. If the number flat-lined that would mean that none of the PTSD or depression programs would be effective in the least. If that were the case it would save time, money and emotional distress by terminating every one of the VAs programs for PTSD and depression.

One suicide is sad. 7,400. Incomprehensible!
Understanding how this number is deceptive, is even more saddening and maddening.
How death certificates are documented is imperative to obtaining accurate statistics, each state does not follow pne standard, there are to many variables prior to reaching . David did mention that most statistics were taken from death certificates and some records were lost to human/system error, ( ie: coding, lack of documentation, misdiagnosis love the respiratory arrest ones...etc.)
ONE is the only number to focus on right now to get to Zero.
But we have not approached the root cause analysis of why?
Dr Shulkin is rock solid and the va should be honored to have him. He is most certainly involved and on top of this subject matter. I will even take it one step farther and say that Dr. David Shulkin was the best thing to happen to that system! If anyone will pursue change he is your catatalyst.
We all have our demons.
