On the one hand raising the minimum wage is a good idea, especially for those who find themselves stuck in that job and its all they really have. But on the other hand its not good because bigger companies are going to raise the cost of goods and services to keep their profits stable or to grow.
We all know that minimum wage jobs are not meant to be turned into a career but for many people it does for a variety of factors, none of which makes much sense to someone who is not in that situation.
Small companies suffer more though because they struggle to balance the wage with the profit and keep the profit steady or increase it. With a small business that say employs 5 people and you have a solid customer base there is not much wiggle room on costs of services without potentially losing a customer.
Its a slippery slope because those wage increases are going to be off set by the increase in goods and services so there is no real difference by adding a few cents to the wage and the goods and services increasing.

OK. Seems like we need a basic Barney-style reminder of how the economy works...

A. Money has value ONLY because not everyone has it.
B. When people make more money without producing anything of value, money isn't worth as much.
C. When an employer pays MORE wage for the same work, his expenses go up, and his profits go down. If that employer wants to stay in business, he has to either 1) raise prices or 2) sell more product.
D. Employers can't sell more product because the employees haven't increased their production.
E. Prices go up for everything.
F. Now people scream for ANOTHER increase in wages.

Yes, this is simple stuff. You cannot force employers to volunteer to make less money. Costs are ALWAYS passed on to the consumers.
