One military base housing Afghan refugees now has a larger population “than half the towns of New Jersey.”
That was the assessment of the New York Times in an article about Fort Dix, in the Trenton, N.J. area, where many newcomers live in a community referred to as Liberty Village, which provides them with a variety of services. “There are 11,000 people living there now — more evacuees than on any of the six other U.S. bases still hosting families evacuated from Afghanistan as America’s 20-year war in the country reached its chaotic end in late August,” the Times explained about the facility that is officially known as Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst.
