Armstrong started it, but then there were other doping cheats uncovered, and now there’s the electric motor assist in the hub.
It would make it a lot more interesting if the riders were issued their bikes the morning of the race. Turn them back in at the end of the race. Bikes would be all one brand. Teams would have two hours to setup and check out the bikes before the race.

COL David Turk, that would certainly level the “playing field”, but the various bicycle manufacturers will never allow that to happen.
BTW, it appears as though we live only a few miles from each other!

LTC Stephen C. - to clarify, Armstrong was not the first to dope. He was the first downer, that turned me off to the tour. I agree that my suggestion is very unlikely, but it would be interesting.
Yes, I believe you live in Franklin; I’m a few miles south.

As much as I used to enjoy watching this, it is difficult to believe this is a very clean sport anymore and that takes all the enjoyment out of it.

CPT Richard Riley, I think professional bicycling is fraught with doping. However, my wife lived on the French Riviera for two years (Navy brat), majored in French in college and taught French in high school! We watch the race, but she could not care less about the race and the riders. She likes looking at the scenery of the French countryside! 1SG Carl McAndrews

There seems to be a lot of Lance Armstrong references here and most are negative. For me, Lance Armstrong turned me on this event and I still enjoy it. Lance doped, duh. So did practically everyone else. What turned me off to Lance himself was his character, and that has nothing to do with this race. I'm sure it's still a dirty sport but what those guys do day in and day out is impressive. Plus, whenever money and fame are on the line, some people will do whatever it takes to win. That will never change.

I still enjoy it, MAJ (Join to see). I indicated in other responses that Lance was one of many. I watched Stages 1 and 2 on Saturday and Sunday.
