Not really a surprise, as someone who worked in shipbuilding and repair post military, I can attest to the fact that the sea wears out the most well constructed ships. As soon as Iron ore is formed into steel, mother nature does its damn best to convert it back to rust.

That is correct. That's why they are being removed from frontline strategic duty (SSBN) and converted into cruise missile SPECOPS subs (SSGN). The first four oldest are now SSGN's.
