When the author builds an essay on a false premise, what follows is bound to wander afield. For example...
"Washington and Beijing may not admit it, but the truth is our planet, for the first time ever, is in the sway of two globally entangled empires."
Neither nation, the US nor China, is an empire. Indeed, the US has largely followed China's ancient example in dealing with the world.
In the 15th Century, when the nations of Europe were building competing empires, China launched a fleet to sail the world and greet its neighbors. They didn't arrive on foreign shores to conquer. They arrived bearing gifts to demonstrate that no one had anything they were interested in. You want art, treasure, technology? Here, take ours. It was known as the Treasure Fleet.
Hasn't the US done much the same. You want a better form of government, technology, wealth? Here take ours.
In both cases, both nations were seeking fair trading partners.
Interestingly, during WWII, American volunteers fought well to help the Chinese resist another empire. Japan, like England, is an island nation with few natural resources. Just feeding its own people is a challenge. And Japan followed England's example, and attempted to build an empire to provide what it could not provide itself.
America and China have been fair trading partners for several decades now. The only strife arising between us comes from our mutual fascination with socialism. As the Soviets and the Nazis clashed over differing interpretations of socialism, American and China are clashing.

a lot of the places China is gaining control its through economics instead of Military Action. They end up owning a lot of other countries thought outright ownership or the debt the other countries own to China. Not one shot was fired by they did spread their control in many other ways. In the History of our own Country, President Thomas Jefferson understood that the United States needed a strong Nay to look out for American Interest all over the globe, China also understands that concept very well and continues to expand their own Navy and forward operating Military assets.
