Seems cut and dried to me. He was clearly reaching for a weapon -- which they found. This armchair Admiral calls it a good shoot.

This whole incident is an unholy hot mess...
I don't personally disagree with the original complaint that sparked these "demonstrations". Frankly, I'm one of "those guys" who thinks the prevailing ideologies / resulting legalities are ruining ways of life, hemming in freedoms, and degrading the overall quality of the American public.
That said, I'm sad that the people who took up the gauntlet were a bunch of drama-queen, phony "smooth operators" who like posting YouTube videos and getting headlines. I'm sadder still that the people whose duty it is to oppose them are more in line with the sort of true Patriots we need today...God help us if the nut-jobs on Left and Right end up putting the majority of us at each others throats just to fulfill some wet-dream of being at Custer's Last Stand or Pickett's Charge.
There's no question in my mind, if he had surrendered, he'd be in a warm cell right now taking calls from high-end lawyers willing to defend him. Instead, his wife and kids just lost him forever and for no good reason. What a waste.
Maybe people will start getting the hint that the man in the blue (or ACU) is only doing his duty, and when you reach for a weapon, you get what you ask for.

When it boiled down to it, they were somehow tying to connect a court imposing a stiffer sentence ( one that was mandatory) on two arsonists with land grabbing Feds.

Well said, 1stSgt- I get that these lands aren't private property...and I think there's a point where anyone with common sense doesn't pull the ears on a tiger. However, if any of the "facts" are to be taken for granted, the ranchers have been trying to play it legal for years...with the Government making it increasingly more difficult to operate. My line of work brings me into contact with the EPA and the utility providers I support...There truly are ridiculous regulations being proposed on well, everything. A couple of years ago, some Park Ranger pulled my father over for a broken tail-light, then tried threatening a weapons charge because he was driving his work truck (with tools aboard). Dad was respectful, cool and collected, and drove away with a ticket...but the Ranger showed her six in an unprofessional way that day. If the BLM isn't trying to work with the ranchers needs, and the net result is that they can't make a go of it...then I can see where at some point, you get fed up. The increased sentences sounded a lot like "double jeopardy" to me too-my understanding is that the ranchers were going to jail peacefully under the earlier sentence for "arson" (aka, controlled burn). Bottom line-I hate that the guys who "stand up" have questionable motives, backgrounds and then make false claims and stupid choices...but it seems to me that one part of our society needs to stop trying to change everything about the other side, if we want to avoid senseless conflict.

The protesters, if they can be called that, initially took over to protest two arsonist being sent back to jail to finish their sentences. The people in the area dont want them there.

There is a correct way to address grievances. Laws and legal proceedings need to be taken in front of courts. A bunch of fat assed middle aged wanna-bes ( a lot of them being military posers or Embleshers) waving weapons is not going to accomplish anything. Well it will make you despised by the locals and get you ventilated by law enforcement.
