How many vets of that era will admit to owning a pair of double-knit bell bottoms for wear off base incognito?

Yap, They had to stay in fashion for all those hippy bastards! All those bright colors and shit to make sure you could see them! Then those leisure suits, Christ if you smoked you had to worry that you didn't catch yourself on fire. Great time!

At 6'5" and thin as a Rail. I was always hard to find pants for. I had an Aunt that would sew extensions on My Jeans, Colorful Extensions at that, They were Flared and the extension would carry it further. Needless to say I used to look Pretty Cool!

PO3 Donald Murphy - Didn't become a "Fleety" until much later in my Career and Liberty Cuffs were more uncommon by then but I have seen some of that wonderful art.

I used to throw my uniforms away when I got back from sea and then go to the Lucky Bag to get new ones for free. And being "pre-owned" some were pretty old. I had a set that must have been from the late 1960's and after taking the rate badges off and putting mine on, I noticed the cuffs. Sadly, that uniform got damaged and thrown away.

Our Lucky Bag was pretty funny. The people working there were transients who were getting out and didn't care so they never rotated stock, folded anything. There was a bin marked "socks," a bin marked "jumpers", etc. And you basically just had to go through them at your convenience. The guy there was one of my ex-shipmates from another boat so he would "ping" me when new stuff came in. One day I needed dress whites and the bin felt like 800 feet deep and I ended up getting in and digging as everything I was getting was either holy, ripped or stained.

I found a set folded really weird so I couldn't see it clearly, but it had that Navy laundromat smell so I grabbed it. Got it home and it was a set of really old dress whites that had the blue piping and blue stars. I couldn't believe it! I ended up giving them to the local submarine museum. It had some interesting cuff art on it as well. Two naked women doing certain "things" and you would point to the "thing" you wanted when you pulled into a non-English speaking port.
