Hubby and I have been saying this all along...just because you test positive for COVID doesn't mean that is the cause of death

COL Randall C.
I long have had an issue about mortality numbers for COVID when I discovered that the United States counts COVID deaths very much like the medical community does for the surgical mortality rate.
The post-op surgery mortality rate is defined as anyone that has died within 30 days of release from the hospital, regardless of the cause. If you have heart surgery and get hit by a bus while walking across the street three weeks after your hospital stay, you're counted in the post-op rate.
Same with COVID. The numbers were often viewed through the same lens. If you die, regardless of the cause, and are COVID positive, then you are counted in the COVID death statistics.
I'm with Dr. Wen on the importance of being precise about the information because otherwise it just becomes another philosophical talking point where facts don't mean as much as an opinion does.
