There was a topic about the Marines on FB. A few of the stupid jackass Marines said the the Corps kicks ass and the Army occupies. They were so full of themselves and stupid. I said in both Iraq wars while heavy Army divisions were wiping out the Iraqi ground forces where were the Marines? Jackasses had no reply. There are some really stupid people out there.
To top that off the Marine Commandant wants to get rid of all the tanks and most of the artillery so the Marines can fight in small groups. He wants the Marines to fight in small groups. If we fight China and Russia will they help our Marines by fighting in small groups as well, or will the Marines watch from ships because the Army has to conduct a large amphibious operations? The military has to be ready to conduct a full spectrum of operations and by stating they will only fight in small groups pigeon holes the marines. I really don't think the Commandant's strategic reorganization to smaller fighting units is wise at all. I guess there will be no more future Tarawas, Iwo Jimas, Okinawa?
How do small groups sustain large operations? They can't. In WWII the US Army provided two divisions to augment the Marines in amphibious operations and now the Marines want to do less. Silly

MAJ Ken Landgren - Not since the 1990's. Here's an article from a year ago that explains why the Marines are reinventing themselves. https://wavellroom.com/2020/04/21/the-united-states-marine-corps-is-changing-why-should-we-care/
The United States Marine Corps is Changing. Why Should we Care? »
The USMC is changing and the reforms offer an insight into US strategic policy making. Why should the NATO and Europe care about it?

And this explains a lot of what isn't in the previous article. https://www.popularmechanics.com/military/weapons/a36005513/us-marine-corps-historic-reinvention/
The Marine Corps Is About to Reinvent Itself—Drastically
The service is undergoing its biggest reorganization in 100 years, shifting from a second land army to smaller amphibious units. But why now?

The focus is more on protecting the navy. The assumptions are:
- The smaller force of Marines can take all the islands.
- The army will provide tank support. How does the army get the tanks to the fight?
- Missiles are effective against the enemy on the ground, in the air, and in the sea.
The question is, will adversaries like China read our memo saying they can't have thousands upon thousands of military members on an island? Will they help us and comply so the Marines can fight a small spectrum of operations? What happens if they take a whole country? It sounds like attacking and occupying an island is an after thought when the fight for the island can be large and brutal.
