Why, Trump did not enter this as a full time politician as most of our candidates. If you go back to the past I dare to say did George Washington sell his plantation and his distillery. As long as he can avoid a conflict of interest when it comes to his business ventures I say let him have his business. Hell Hillary was the one with all the conflict of interest with all the money she took from questionable sources.

Incisive comment, especially the part about President Washington .... President Trump's business interests are complex, global and involve real, actual assets that cannot easily be disposed of. He is already completely financially independent (like President Kennedy) and is transferring his business interests (and the associated headaches) to his children. Also, Trump is more of a brand than a business. Brands are ethereal, not material.

Also, given the level of increased (and apparently hostile) scrutiny President Trump is under will most likely preclude even the appearance of a conflict-of-interest .....

Just my $0.02 .....

I don't think so. The NPR article included no legal references...only opinions on the ethics of it. President Kennedy’s business ventures included banking, stock trading, producing movies and selling liquor. He continued to have a role in managing and owning The Merchandise Mart throughout his presidency. Like Trump has promised, he donated his Presidential salary to charities. Unless a new law has been introduced on the topic since then, I don't think he needs to choose.

Col Joseph Lenertz Sir, I agree to a point. I spent nearly 20 years of public service and I considered it a calling. While I did not take a vow of poverty, I did work for less than what I could have obtained in the private market (As I am sure you are aware of yourself). Trump could be of the highest moral caliber, but if there is even a hint that there is a conflict of interest it will be perceived as unethical. It may counter productive to the good of the country.

SGT William Howell - Completely agree. You are a man of integrity. I would say nearly all of us vets and active military see things the same way regarding the ethics of mixing public and private interests. I wish we could hold our politicians to the same ethical standard. Sadly, I'm not even convinced we can hold them to a legal standard half the time...so the ethical bar seems way too high for them.

Col Joseph Lenertz Well said. I have always thought if we could hold an exit election after each term to decide if we execute the politician or allow them to run again we could get a lot more work out of them.

I am not concerned. If Trump can discover how his predecessors made so much money in politics without questions he would be as well off doing that as staying with his business.
