After the explosion, small, single-story, prefabricated, one-bedroom homes were erected at Port Chicago to replace the demolished on base housing. In the mid-1950's the Navy sold them. My parents and several of their friends bought some and used them for cabins on the west side of Lake Tahoe. Adding a steep pitched roof made for a great sleeping loft.
