The great universities of Europe were started by the monks in monasteries. Freedom of thought was encouraged because there was a faith in God as creator. Most church leaders did not believe God could be refuted so science was allowed to advance. Indeed by understanding the function of creation attributes of God could be understood so science was encouraged. Muslims went a different route. They believed the physical world could be arbitrarily changed by God so studying it was pointless. The Church has produced many very creative individuals who advanced science.
