A year earlier and more than 5,000 miles north of Cape Legoupil, Anders Hofman stood shivering in weak winter sunlight on the edge of Copenhagen harbour.
Wearing only a pair of black trunks, he plunged into the still, dark water below. The temperature was barely 1C. Thirty-five seconds later he clambered, shaking and gasping, back onto the boardwalk. This wasn't the start of his training, but it was the work that would come in most useful.
The aim of Project Iceman was simple. Hofman was seeking to become the first human to complete an Ironman triathlon - a 2.4-mile swim, a 112-mile bike leg and a marathon - in the least appropriate continent for such a feat; Antarctica.

A Dumb A SM went into an unauthorized area near the floating sea ice wharf I was building. He wound up out on fractured ice. I carefully made my way over with an ice pole. He decided to jump on me which put me in the water. My head was a good stepping stone. People on the shore saw it. By the time they helped me out, I was more than weak. The SM was sent home the following week and processed out with an "Other". The water was 28 degrees. I speak from experience that you won't last long in it unless you have that fancy survival suit.

PO1 William "Chip" Nagel I know people who have done extreme Fat Bike races in Alaska and they are crazy!
