The lab at the Indianapolis VA hospital denied employment to a veteran based on a bogus question. Does he know how to use Excel Spreadsheets? It was totally irrelevant because nobody there used Excel in the lab. The lab was also corrupt as the manager wanted to hire her friends.

I am a doctoral prepared nurse practitioner and am a service-connected Veteran. I have applied for numerous jobs at the VA since 2013 and have never been chosen. I have been told that they “know who they want to hire” and often times “hire from within”. I have also been told that my 10-point veteran preference does not apply to nursing jobs. Also, if I may mention, I worked at the VA in another state for 7.5 years, am vested, permanent and should be “reinstated” during the application process but still nothing. I am not sure if I should pursue employment at the VA any longer. Any suggestions!

It appears you have to know someone on the inside. I too applied for a few VA positions after I retired. You’d think due to my rank, professional military and civilian experience (and degree), plus my personality working and/or in charge of hundreds of millions of dollars of VA projects, my resume would get a look. Nope. One time, I received a notification that due to my veterans preference points, my resume was being sent for consideration. Within one or two days, I received a notification that that posting had closed and it was being reposted for internal candidates only.
Don’t get me wrong. I really believe the rank and file doctors, nurses and other local support members do a very good job. I have much less respect for the senior administration staff and their HR (based on personal experiences). There is a lot of “retired on active duty” mind set. This may not sit well with others but, “I call them the way I see them”.

COL David Turk sadly what you say is true. Even as a young nurse at the VA (prior to active duty), the mentality was the same. “They know who they want” and only interview to “check the box” that they did what was required for a federal position. Sounds like they are missing out on some real talent!
