It seems likely to me that the protests in Hong Kong will serve to hasten the end of the illusion of freedom in that city. It is just the excuse that the Chinese Communists need to quash the unruly mobs incited by democracy and the rule of law.

the very idea of Communist China embracing "Freedom" Is a ginormous joke... Freedom to control the market and work people like slaves is the Communist model of freedom...

Its not just the struggle between Democracy and Communism within the Chinese area but a problem beyond even their borders here, Socialism/Communism vs Democracy and something to be wary of both there and here. We have learned little from the Examples in some parts of Europe and see much of the same from Mainland China spreading into areas such as Hong Kong. Its about total control and not about the population of people there. Communism and socialism is and always has been about control by a selected few and doing the thinking for everybody else and special favor for those in control. Taiwan, a Democracy and Hong Kong does know the difference and what the price is when Communism takes over. !
