Exactly what the Democrats are thinking; another 3.5 million voters dependent upon the Government welfare check. Guess who the majority will end up voting for?
On the other hand, I am leaning towards the "you gotta pay to play" camp on this one. I think they either accept Statehood, get their sh*t in one sock, and pay taxes or we cut them loose.

Stereotypical at best. Not everyone in the island would be on welfare. Get educated fellows. A great number of Puertoricans, Americans since 1917, in the island and abroad, have "paid to play" with blood, sweat and tears for the US Military since WWI. https://www.defense.gov/News/Article/Article/974518/puerto-ricans-represented-throughout-us-military-history/
Puerto Ricans Represented Throughout U.S. Military History
As citizens of the United States, Puerto Ricans have participated in every major United States military engagement from World War I onward, with the soldiers of Puerto Rico’s 65th Infantry Regiment

MCPO Roger Collins - I thank God every day that I got out before the Military was attacked by the PC crowd. "Old School" Sailors Rock!

Opinion piece, but accurate as far as I can tell from other sources.

Puerto Rico's bankruptcy will only prolong its economic meltdown
Years of bad governance has led Puerto Rico to this point. Years of outspending its resources and borrowing billions of dollars from creditors.
