My assigned battle buddy in basic and AIT was like this. He grew up in a cabin with his dad in the middle of nowhere. That dude had no social skills at all and just seemed "off". He was super quiet during basic but during AIT he got comfortable with everyone and he started talking more. It got more and more bizarre as training went on to the point where I was uncomfortable sleeping in the same room with him. At the time we were both in the Reserves and several months after we graduated I got a call from a nursing home asking me to serve as a character reference for a job he applied for. I went back and forth for more than a week on whether or not to call them back. By the time I finally called them back they told me the reference was no longer reference. Such a relief. I don't know what happened to that kid but I have a feeling that guy is holed up in a basement writing a manifesto of some sort.
