PO1 William "Chip" Nagel The Indianapolis was a tragedy all the way around. The loss of the ship, the loss of the crew, and the treatment of the Commanding Officer by the Department of the Navy after the ordeal. It is truly a travesty that the man died (by his own hand) before the Navy finally decided to exonerate him of fault. I always loved this scene in Jaws. I love the way he instantly sobers up Hooper with just the name of the ship. That is how it should be for all survivors. If they were aboard her, and they are willing to admit it, instantly buy that man a drink, dinner, or just a handshake. They truly have been through the worst of it.
