It is interesting that on average, the U.S. Supreme Court considers about 7,000 to 8,000 petitions each term, and accepts about 80 for oral argument. This means that a significant number of cases related to the violation of 1st amendment rights are filed each year, but only a small fraction of them are selected for oral argument at the Supreme Court.

The majority of First Amendment lawsuits and court cases are brought against government entities, not private parties. The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) tracks many of the key First Amendment cases that reach the U.S. Supreme Court.
