For anyone who is casually glimpsing at this at doesn't look at what he has really done may think this is just a case of someone who played dress-up and told tall tales to his family and people he met to make himself look better, which while is reprehensible, is legal under the newly written Stolen Valor Act of 2013.
However, what Medina did do is contact a Non-For_Profit Organization " Maverick-Movement" and obtained over $1,500 based at least in part on his embellished claims.
Iv'e heard it said many times that stolen valor is just the rancid cherry on top of a shit sundae. Certainly the case here. The sad thing is, because he is an actual veteran, the DA will probably not prosecute.

1stSgt Eugene Harless, I'm understanding that if there is any monetary gain, it's a felony and they will be arrested.

SGT (Join to see) - That's where the lines blur. While Medina may have embellished his serving, he is a Veteran. Maverick-Movement, the NPO who assisted him exists to help veterans in need. If Medina had never served at all, there may be a case for prosecution, however, unless it could be proven that his embellishment moved him to the head of the line, there probably isn't a case. For example if MM had a special fund set up only for purple heart recipients, and Medina either lied or forged documents to receive those funds, I think there would be a case.
As it stands now he is simply a veteran who was in need who was assisted by a NPO. Just how " needy" he was or the character of his service is something the NPO should have clarified before handing him a check.
