one of the problems is, they failed to Modernize and come into the 20th century with production and their products...
it would have cost in the beginning ... but in the long run it would far less expensive have kept the industry and the Jobs from being farmed out to the rebuilding nations after the war...
In a way we did them a favor by destroying their production plants because they came back far more productive and less expensive to operate and maintain...
the other down side is the extensive Unions and their efforts ... and then the progress of the Union from representing the rank and File to becoming a formidable force in politics and becoming , as most politicians do... inevitably corrupt and criminal...

Unions caused the industries' lack of competitiveness and this led to their decline. Isn't this simply stating the obvious?
