We need a common language to unite us. Additionally, English has become the language of trade, finance and diplomacy among other things so people might as well learn it.

Used to be that French was the international language of business and diplomacy. Think that American version of English has supplanted that though.

You’re absolutely correct on all points, Lt Col John (Jack) Christensen! In fact, the still used functional term “lingua franca” (a language that is adopted as a common language between speakers whose native languages are different) ultimately was derived because French was considered the common language of the time.
Ironic that the lingua franca of today is ENGLISH!
