PO1 William "Chip" Nagel When I exited the LST which had ferried us from the USS Weigel to a landing at Inchon in June of 1954, I noticed Marines with ‘Red Tabs’ sewn to their dungarees at the knees. I was curious as to what the red tabs combated. Now I know, thanks.

The red patches came about during WW2. When the Marines landed on Pacific Islands "Shore Party" Marines with their red patches sewn on their unitilities, indicated they were there to direct beach landing traffic; not replace dead and wounded Marines engaging Japanese forces. A great Naval Marine Corps tradition.
