ILLUSTRATIONS: (1) 44th BG B-24Ds on their bomb run over Ploesti, 1 Aug. 1943. (2) 44th BG B-24D Liberators pass over the Ploesti oil refinery on their bomb run. (3) The 44th BG's B-24D "Suzy Q" on its bomb run over Ploesti. TSgt. Kretzer was the top turret gunner and flight engineer when he was killed in the crash of his 66th BS, 44th BG B-24D shot down over Romania on this historic mission. (4) Flak badly damages 44th BG CO Col. Leon Johnson's B-24D "Suzy Q" during the 1 Aug. 1943 Ploesti mission. Col. Johnson made it back to Bengazhi and was subsequently awarded the MoH for his role on the mission.
