The order for work to start on building the Berlin Wall was issued on 13 August 1961. East German guards sealed the border, preventing an exodus to the west. Barbed wire was gradually replaced with the concrete barrier, which remained until 9 November 1989

In the early 1980s, while stationed in Germany with my father, we got the chance to visit the Wall. After it came down in 1989 I’ve seen many pieces of it in museums, etc. commentating the history. Recently, while being stationed in Germany, we took our own kids to Berlin and even stayed in a Hotel in ‘East’ Berlin! Wow, amazing to see both parts of Berlin and share with my kids.

I was stationed in Berlin from 1984 to 1987....I was NCOIC of SATCOM Term , Berlin. The world was different back then.....I was proud to defend our freedom....
