She might not get re-elected as she comes from a predominantly Republican district and when you switch parties rarely do you get to keep your seat unless your district lines are gerrymandered for you by the State. Hawaii voted Democrat in the last Presidential Election and the current Democratic Governor is up for election in 2018 so perhaps she perceives the Governor will win election again and if he does get elected again....he will be Governor in a Census year and will redistrict the Hawaii Congressional Districts in her newly adopted Party's favor? Just a hunch here. Still no guarantee she will retain that seat though.

SPC Erich Guenther I suppose it's always possible the person was more interested in doing what they thought was right than winning re-election. I know it's unlikely given that we are talking Congress here, but there are a few.

Edit to add: Correction, this is state government. The likelihood that she is doing this based on principles has increased. ;)
