Across the country, military families are reporting deplorable condition in base housing.
Rats, roaches, mold and filthy conditions are outlined in a report that surveyed military families at 160 military bases across the country.
The Military Families Advisory Network conducted the survey and issued the report.
Nearly 60 percent of the families report maintenance issues, 24.7 percent noted filthy conditions in their assigned homes when they moved in and 29.9 percent reported mold problems.
At MacDill Air Force base, 54 percent of those surveyed reported mold problems.
Amie Norquist first reported mold problems in her base assigned home at MacDill months ago.
"It's made us sick. I'm watching our kids suffer from various illnesses. We're in debt from losing our belongings. We've uprooted multiple times," said Norquist.
She and her active duty military husband have been forced to move eight times in a year due to the problems and they've lost thousands of dollars replacing furniture, clothes and other family items contaminated by mold.
"I think it's disappointing because as military families we're not expecting to live in a mansion but we should have clean homes," said Norquist.
She and Traci Lenz, who also lived in a home at MacDill contaminated by mold, traveled to Washington D.C. to report to Congress about the mold problem.
The Secretary of the Air Force traveled to MacDill to investigate the issue but Lenz and Norquist say the problems have not been fixed.
