This probably shouldn't surprise you as a majority of national politicians to include the Rs have no practical military experience.

"Over the past 25 years nearly every congressional delegation has had fewer veterans than the previous group. Sixteen percent of senators and 18 percent of representatives in the new class will be military veterans or are currently serving.

Jump back to 1971, when member military service was at its peak, veterans made up 72 percent of members in the House and 78 percent in the Senate. In 1981, that number dipped to 64 percent of members, but veterans still made up a majority of Congress." (edit: the 114th Congress included less than 18%)

Only an observation but,
-The US is a bicoastal nation with China, NK and a large portion of Russia on the West and Europe, Mid East, and Africa to the East with Central and South America to the South.
- Does anyone remember the old fight and win on two fronts standard, wonder why that was in play.
-Anyone ever read about the Nazis courting Mexico and South American nations around WWII time frame or about Yamashita touring the US just prior to WWII.
-Point is we need a pretty robust force just to adequately provide for civil defense. Let alone project force to meet our treaty obligations.
-What happens when we are matched or loose the air superiority we have enjoyed since at least Korea. or the ability to provide naval support and force projection.
-Can we do all that with what we have? Hope we never find out.

The ability to fight and win two wars simultaneously is still a core national defense doctrine. It's why the Navy is mandated by law to maintain a 12 carrier force and was the prime logic behind GEN Odierno's testimony before the Armed Services Committee that meeting draw down goals required by sequestration would threaten national defense.

It's their Mantra. The Military is Never Big Enough and their solution to everything is to throw money at the Military Industrial Complex. It's what they do. One of Their Favorite Tools of "Diplomacy" is the Military since Civilized Discussion is challenging for them or at least the Politicians that claim to be Republicans.
