For the most part, it's an intentional decision to refrain from politics in order to avoid politicizing the military. Each time you see a general step out and do something openly political, there is usually a whole group of other generals who call him out for it.

People should pay attention to them when their talking about military issues, however if it's not a military issue... their opinion is no more or less valid than any celebrity speaking outside of his area of expertise.

Being a General in an unpopular war could be a reason. Schwarzkopf came out on top but didn't seek the offices. He has the benefit of the Gulf War patriotism.
Petraeus blew his chances ( leaving this open for pun).
Powell did just fine.
