Retracing Cold War memories: Part Four, Wildflecken/Rhone

Spent the winter of 1963 at Wildflecken -- snowed every day & every night -- with spring's arrival, it turned to mud. My unit (1st Battle Group [Reinforced], 28th Infantry, 1st Infantry Division) was training at Wildflecken for our primary mission of augmenting Berlin Brigade from Ft. Riley. We CONUS Soldiers learned a lot about soldiering from those tough 7th Army combat units. At that time, 3rd Battalion, 50th "Play the Game" Infantry (Mechanized), 3rd Infantry Division was Wildflecken's Infantry garrison.
