What this major is doing to reunite veterans (or their families) with their medals is a noble cause - I hope he and others keep it up.
Back in the '80s, I helped my father (a WWII vet - 33rd Inf Div) get his medals, which he had never been issued when he was discharged immediately after the war because the War Dept was too busy discharging millions of troops to issue them their medals and other awards. So, I contacted the Military records depository in St. Louis, MO to see what needed to be done. Since that place had burned in the '70s, resulting in the loss of many personnel files (including dad's), my dad and I had to fill in forms detailing his service - his unit, who his officers were, and what campaigns he had been in - and submit them. Once that was done, the military records depository responded with a list of what medals and ribbons dad rated, and we submitted that to the Army to get the medals issued. I was surprised to learn that any soldier that earned the Combat Infantryman badge in the war was also awarded a Bronze Star Medal (it is awarded for administrative reasons, as well as for valor). My dad has passed (he was 93), but his medals, ribbons and badges are mounted in a display on my wall - right beside my own.
