Many years ago (decades?) a Russian Jew who had worked for years to emigrate from the Soviet Union visited a Jewish Schul where I worshiped and told us of his experiences and so many others who wished to escape that place. He claimed that his departure had been delayed because he had served in their armed forces and, because of the highly sensitive nature of his position, the Soviets didn't want their enemies (US) to have access to his knowledge. Well, I stood and responded stating that I too was trapped because of my military service. I was not allowed to travel outside the US for several years following my separation from active duty and I too was barred for life from ever even visiting a Soviet bloc nation. (This surprised the congregation). I supposed I should have stopped there, but I went on to ask, how could the Soviet Union ever become a better place if the good people there simply kept running away. (This, as you may well imagine, got me into trouble) As it turns out, the Soviet Union fell, and many of the "good" people took advantage of the confusion to escape. I think Russia could have used them to help build a better nation, don't you? Now, we are helping people escape Syria. Why couldn't we simply provide them with safe places in or near their native lands, so they could rebuild their nation when the revolution there is resolved. Unlike the immigrants who helped build America, these refugees don't want to be Americans. They don't want to assimilate into the American culture and adopt American ways. They want to remake their nation wherever they land, be it Europe or America. They want us to assimilate into them.

"I think Russia could have used them to help build a better nation, don't you?" I do. However, even though the USSR fell, Russia is still not a free nation. There are still a lot of the old guard with a police state mentality running the governments, state and local.

Cpl (Join to see) - because there are still many who pine for the good old days when Uncle Joe ran things and they were a feared nation. Always remember that people have precisely the government they want and deserve
