With the President calling our free press "the enemy of the people" are we not following the same path?

MSG Stan Hutchison A little bit. I don't think he will get any similar legislation with the current House though. But if he could, it seems like something that would fit with his actions to date. I doubt it would survive SCOTUS review.

If you can't outlaw the press from criticizing you, then the next best thing is to convince your followers they are the enemy and everything bad they say about you is "fake news".

Just read up on how China does it. They restrict the internet and are even working with US companies to help them restrict it more. Google is working with the Chines as we speak to reduce access to the web for their people. Let that sink in, Google is helping China restrict freedom to the web. The same can be done in Russia.

The part that should be more concerning is US companies participating in this sort of work. You might end up questioning their motives as they appear to love to censor content.

Cpl Jeff N. For years Google wouldn't help China with this and they were locked out of the Chinese market. I.e. the great firewall of China wouldn't allow people inside China to access Google. In that time Google saw the rise of a Chinese competitor Baidu. Eventually, Google gave in and is now accessible in China because they filter the search results.

Should Google have done this, even though by not doing it they were locked out of China? I agree with you, no they shouldn't have even though they were being locked out of that market.

"Don't be evil" was part of Google corporate motto for years. They removed it right about the same time they gave in to China.

SPC Kevin Ford - Yes, they pursued revenue and earnings and made a conscious decision to help the Chinese communists oppress their people and eliminate the free flow of information. "Don't be evil" indeed. Don't be fooled though. They actively mess with their Google search results for you and me too.

LTC Eugene Chu I suspect Russia has good reason to view the internet as a potential information warfare vector.
