LTC Eric Udouj thanks for the read and share. Simply there is nothing "new under the sun" Russia has always kept an Wild Ace up its sleeve.

Actually - there is something different... it is Vietnam itself - and that is now the Wild Card. Good point SFC Davis!

lets not forget that Vietnam fought a small war against China in 1978 or so AND WON! Vietnam is an old hand at playing one side against the other. With the current resurgence of China in the South China Sea & environs, plus some of the island disputes are with Vietnam, it is not without possibility that Vietnam will play the Bear against the Dragon. Russia has not forgotten the Mongolian hordes raping and pillaging their way across the steppes and European Russia back in the 12th & 13th centuries. Russia wants global reach for it's aspirational blue water navy, so does China. Russia's economy is faltering because of oil issues. China's economy weakened because they couldn't keep their paws off it. Vietnam finds itself in the catbird's seat because of Camranh Bay and other naval bases. let's wait and see.

Yes... as i recall China's deepest penetration was about 75 or so miles. They suffered horrendous personnel & materiel casualties & limped home.
