Gear head post #10
If you read post #9 , you will see there are things that I will do to a new (used) car after I buy it. This is one of them. First off, I would like to bust the myth that running an engine flush product or Seafoam will cause problems with your engine, that is not the case. They will however reveal existing problems your engine had before you cleaned it, like say sludge plugging a hole in a gasket.
I recommend that after running an engine flush or Seafoam through your engine that you remove the oil pan and get a new gasket. Since not all the sludge or larger carbon deposits may be flushed through just the plug, and you can give the oil pan a good cleaning before reinstalling it, I also suggest you clean the edges that the gasket sit on so you get a good clean fit. I also recommend doing one more flush (without chemicals) andfilter change before you do your final oil change and filter replacement, so that no residual chemicals remain to break down your oil or thin it out.
