A bill naming the U.S. Post Office in Pine Plains after U.S. Navy Senior Chief Petty Officer Shannon M. Kent, one of four Americans killed in Syria in a January suicide bombing, is headed for the U.S. Senate after it was passed by the House of Representatives.
Introduced by Rep. Antonio Delgado, D-Rhinebeck, the bill passed the House on Wednesday afternoon. Details were not available on a Senate sponsor.
A Dutchess County native who grew up in Pine Plains and graduated from Stissing Mountain High School, Kent enlisted in the Navy on Dec. 11, 2003. A chief cryptologic technician, she graduated in February 2004 from boot camp at Recruit Training Command in Illinois, according to the Navy.
She spoke five languages, including six dialects of Arabic, and had previously deployed with the Navy SEALS to Iraq and Afghanistan on four different occasions, according to Delgado. She was killed during her fifth combat tour in the Middle East.
