What do you guys think? Should this ship have stayed in port?
One of the things that annoys me about this story is that the media is doing no fact-checking. For example, they're running with one passenger's quote that says the ship was at a 45 degree angle for 'hours'. This is a total crock -- at most, a ship like this has about 35 degrees before she capsizes entirely. Additionally, it wouldn't have 'stayed' at any angle for more than a moment or two -- she'd be rolling back and forth.
So, to me, this whole incident is a non-issue that's being inflated by sensationalist media. The captain had a good plan to avoid the storm, but Mother Nature didn't cooperate. This is the norm, not the exception, as any experienced mariner will tell you. I'm sure the situation was terrifying for passengers who had never experienced such a thing...but that ship was never in any danger, so long as she didn't lose propulsion. Also telling, as stated in the article, only 4 people were slightly injured. Out of almost 6000.
I call media hype.

Ah the Memories. Yeah I concur no chance of that big bugger capsizing and being the Passengers are not Old Salts they are exaggerating quite a bit. Oh Yeah I remember walking on the Bulkheads (Pitch) so much fun. Going up and down ladders, Bottom to top in 2 seconds and 2 steps at Zero Gs while you crest a wave or the Inverse, Sliding down a ladder just using the Handrails as the ship bottoms out a Trough and at 2Gs I weighed double and feeling like my Knees were going to shoot thru my Eyeballs. Remember that no matter how big bad and tough you are everybody gets Sea Sick at a point from the SS3 on the California that would get sick the minute we cast off lines in Port (Chief Corpsman got him a Medical Discharge) to Yours Truly CTO1 and 30ft + seems to have been my breaking Point. If I Knock you down to feed the fishies, Go Chumming, All the rest of the Crew is Sick and Green already!
