My son lives near Alamo Square. The last time I visited there, about three years ago, my wife and I went to Alamo and the Painted Ladies. I was shocked to find homeless camping there and in Golden Gate Park as well..
The way things have been going in San Francisco, I think I would rather send my son the airfare and he can visit New Jersey.
