I agree with the writer's main premise. However, one has to travel the world to see and compare how women are treated elsewhere.

The data simply reflects the extent to which those surveyed believe the risk of sexual violence, harassment and being coerced into sex are concerns where they live... those surveyed don't seem to have been asked to compare the women's issues in their country with other countries, just to express how much of a concern those issues were in their country. The article even pointed out that the perception of those issues had shifted in the US in large part due to the #MeToo movement.

Actual Risk and Perceived Risk do not usually align on issues like this... "On a scale of 1 to 10, how do you perceive the risk of being subjected to sexual violence, harassment or being coerced into sex.?

Unfortunately we can depend on pretty much any news organization to not go out of their way to "desensationalize" their stories, and we can count on right wing organizations like National Review to further twist a story and make it into something it's not.
