Gender Queer is pornography. It is inappropriate in a school library. A person attempting to read it a a school board meeting was removed. If a person wants to read it they can go to the public library. https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-10143337/Florida-school-board-removes-speaker-reading-vulgar-book-available-districts-libraries.html Why don’t you post passages on here and see how the moderators treat it?

I would have to read the book before I made a decision on it, a college library would be different in my opinion, we prevent children from smoking and drinking until they are 18. We don't allow books that are too pornographic between a man and a woman in schools, do we? Why would we allow it between two men or two women? Perhaps we do now, I don't know, I haven't been to high school in nearly a half century.

SGT Dani W. - Thanks for your input. I too believe sex education is very important, and I will add family planning. I have always been a big believer of an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

..."We have this wonderful liberty in this United States to think for ourselves, to make decisions for ourselves, to choose what we want to read, to say what we want to say, decide for ourselves what we believe," she said. "And these proposals to scrub school libraries and public libraries of these books are nothing more than a deeply antidemocratic denial of that right and ultimately, if carried out, will be destructive of our democracy."

Brown wants passsges so since I don't have the book I will post comments by the author and a student who read the book.

Student:
“You probably won’t ever see this but I am a queer FCPS student! My mom and I read your book. I loved it! I related to almost everything you said. I felt so understood and not alone. I think my mom understands me better and I’m more confident in confiding in her since she read your book. Thank you so much for creating your memoir!”

Author
When I was on book tour in 2019, I was asked many times, “What age of reader do you recommend this book for?” I would generally answer, “High school and above,” but the truth is, the readers I primarily wrote it for were my own parents and extended family. When I was first coming out as nonbinary, I kept getting responses along the lines of, “We love you, we support you, but we have no idea what you are talking about.”

There are parents that give the kids drugs to prevent release of sex hormones during the normal growth cycle, doesn’t mean it is a good idea. If the parent wants the kid to read there are a bunch of ways to get the book. What was the school board afraid of?

SGT (Join to see) If the school also stocks "Dear Penthouse" and Playboy, I'll agree with you. Pretty much every school everywhere (at least the K12 ones) recognize this as not appropriate for minors. How then, is a description of fellatio - with accompanying illustrations - any different? Oh! because it is about a "special" group of people who we aren't allowed to say anything against.

90% of this particular story I would have no problem with in the school library. Even if the author had done the "dot dot dot" I still would say "no problem." But you DON'T DESCRIBE THE DOTS. And you CERTAINLY don't illustrate them.

This isn't because the graphic novel is about non-binary or LGBTQ people. It is because it is pornographic and not suitabe for minors.
