Great Idea, Jack! It is long overdue... Something as small as a nut or bolt could wipe out sophisticated equipment or the ISS for that matter... Given the speeds of the space junk...

I always thought that most of this debris burned up in the atmosphere re entering the earths orbit. Thank you for the up date.

Thomas, some of that junk does burn up in the atmosphere if it is in low Earth orbit and its orbit decays, but some of it is in high Earth orbit and who's orbit may not decay will "remain" in a somewhat fixed orbit...and that has the potential of causing a significant problem at some point...
