In many parts of the country, the lead-up to winter is a busy time for squirrels, furiously collecting and hiding acorns and nuts for the cold months ahead. But how can squirrels recall where it has stashed all its stores? And what can studying squirrels tell researchers about memory, learning, and economic decision-making in other species?

I must have 20 squirrels in my back yard living in the gigantic oak trees that produce millions of acorns.

I think squirrels really go by smell. I plant acorns every year in containers, not the squirrels and if I don't keep them covered with a screen mesh of some kind the squirrels will dig them and my black walnut seedlings up PO1 William "Chip" Nagel.
