I remember the 1986 air raid in Libya well. I was a senior in high school and had just enlisted in the delayed entry program (basic training started in August, after I graduated). As you can imagine world events like this took on a whole new significance for me, probably much more so than my peers in high school.

SSG Carlos Madden - Looks like a quick review showing many websites showing the abbreviated letters above- or the name of the link- ie Air Force times. I noticed several yesterday and seeing it more today.

Thanks Maj Marty Hogan for sharing significant events of April 14.
Of significance to me are.
1st: April 14, 1865: President Abraham Lincoln was shot and mortally wounded by John Wilkes Booth during a performance of "Our American Cousin" at Ford's Theater in Washington. This occurred after the CSA had lost its capital of Richmond and was on the ropes as defeat of that rebellion was near at hand. The cowardly conspiracy succeeded in mortally wounding the President but failed in the rest of their attempt to take out the leadership of the US Governmnent.
John Wilkes Booth's co-conspirators Lewis Powell and David Herold were assigned to kill Secretary of State William H. Seward, and George Atzerodt was tasked with killing Vice President Andrew Johnson.
"As the President was watching the play, Booth shot Lincoln from behind at a distance of perhaps three or four feet, hitting him in the back of the head. At 7:22 a.m. the following day, Lincoln died in the Petersen House across the street from the theater. The rest of the conspirators' plot failed; Powell only managed to wound Seward, while Atzerodt, Johnson's would-be assassin, lost his nerve and fled. Booth made a dramatic escape, resulting in a lengthy manhunt that ended in his death. Several other conspirators were later tried and hanged. The funeral and burial of Abraham Lincoln was a period of extended national mourning."
2nd: April 14, 1965: The Joint Chiefs of Staff ordered the deployment of the 173rd Airborne Brigade - the first major U.S. Army ground combat unit - from Okinawa to South Vietnam. The 173rd arrived in Vietnam in May 1965.
3rd: April 14, 1988: Withdrawal of Soviet forces from Afghanistan. An agreement calling for the withdrawal of Soviet forces from Afghanistan is signed by representatives of the USSR, Afghanistan, the United States, and Pakistan. The last soviet troop left Afghanistan on February 15, 1989.
We had been supporting Osama bin Laden among other Mujahideen.
