In Uganda I was invited to a local's home. One of the side dishes served was "white ants" sautéed in butter with greens and peppers. (They looked like ants but were about an inch long and had white wings, no idea what they really were). They were crunchy, but really didn't have much flavor.

SFC Sczymanski James L. - Heard that. I've eaten a few bugs on a dare before. Not particularly tasty. The cricket/grasshopper legs stick in your throat. I've seen shows of various roasted or chocolate covered bugs. In survival mode I guess we'd eat whatever to stay alive. A MSgt at Engr School when I was a boot had come over from Recon. He talked of eating maggots and grubs in the field on long recons, but only when they had to. He was the real deal and I believed him, because he had a distinct "thousand mile stare". He rarely raised his voice or talked much. His eyes were all the encouragement he needed.
