CSM Charles Hayden I was Struck at the Amount of Head Room I had on the Subs I Toured in Pearl Harbor (USS Olympia and USS Jefferson City) being 6'4" but where the Cruisers I served on Had Wide P-Ways, No Such Thing on a Sub. Pass Somone in a P-Way and You're Rubbing Bellies,

Finally, at a shower point in Korea, 3-5? miles down a dusty road in the rear of a GMC 2-1/2 ton, our clothes were DXed and we received the standard cotton fatigues. Those had been dipped in the very aromatic ‘Miticide’ to protect us from some insect.

CSM Charles Hayden - I Remember the Horror Stories of Eau de Submarine. Smell of Diesel mixed with Oxygen Candle, Yummy, The Wives would make their Husbands Strip before coming in the House because of the Smell.

I did one summer cruise at school on a sub. Never again. I may not go outside on a surface ship for days, but I at least have the ability....
