But few soldiers have ever held off thousands of enemy troops with just a couple of buddies and machine guns. And few soldiers have shown such valor in the field and played a pivotal role in two epic battles.
Few soldiers have been so decorated. John Basilone received the Medal of Honor, the Navy Cross and Purple Heart.
John Basilone (November 4, 1916 – February 19, 1945) was a United States Marine Corps Gunnery Sergeant who was killed in action during World War II. He received the Medal of Honor for heroism above and beyond the call of duty during the Battle of Guadalcanal and the Navy Cross posthumously for extraordinary heroism during the Battle of Iwo Jima. He was the only enlisted Marine to receive both of these decorations in World War II.

Basilone Road is named after him. It is a familiar road in and out of Camp Pendelton, California. Watch out for illegals running past you on the 5 freeway. Good thing Camp Pendelton is not a sanctuary city or there would be 5 Divisions of illegal aliens there.
